The slogan promoting the XX Olympics in Munich was: ”The Olympics on the green, the Olympics of short distances, of the Muses and of sport.” The architectural response to this was to elevate the landscape as the dominant element of the design, to make the pathways diverse, interesting and therewith entertaining.

All of its sporting facilities were embedded in hilly landscapes. Above the convex forms of parks the concave forms of the stadium roofs appear to be freely floating. Their doubly curved planes arise through the interaction of the gravitational forces in the columns with the tensile forces in the cables. The light, transparent skin of the roof consists of acrylic glass panes that create an optimal lighting effect. This lightness and dynamic design go well with the intended informality and openness and have contributed to the fact that post the Olympic Games the Olympic Park has become one of the most popular recreation areas of the city of Munich.
