The Casa Milà was planned as a block of flats in the Example, a newly built district of 19th century Barcelona. The flats are grouped around two freely formed light wells. Below the light wells an underground car park was planned for residents’ cars, an absolute innovation at the time!

Construction consisted of a system of steel girders and supports, which made it possible to freely sculpt the facade facing the street. Another feature is the roof construction, which consists of parabolic arches of fired clay bricks. The different sizes of the arches gave rise to a wave like roof landscape. This roof has become famous on account of its numerous imaginatively formed chimneys and ventilation shafts.
